A rain-ready setup for small towable camping

The compact campsite can stay comfortable in bad weather when water paths, entry points, and pack-up order are planned in advance.

01

Pick the high side of camp

A small trailer does not have room for water to collect around every door. Before setting up, look for the high side of the site and place the entry where runoff will move away from the trailer. A five-minute walk with a boot on the ground can save an hour of wet cleanup.

Keep the awning edge clear of the trailer wall so water has a predictable drip line. If you need to cross that line, create a deliberate threshold rather than an accidental puddle.

02

Set the roof, then the living space

Tension the roof and drainage paths before adding chairs, bins, or a cooking table. The shelter should be able to do its main job while the rest of camp is still in the truck. This setup order keeps gear from becoming an obstacle when the wind changes.

Check every guy line at eye level and use a contrasting marker or a clear path around it. Weather preparation should not introduce a new trip hazard.

  • Face the entry away from the prevailing rain.
  • Keep fabric off sharp trailer hardware.
  • Create a wet zone for shoes and rain shells.

03

Pack the wet part last

When departure arrives, pack dry items first and leave the shelter for last. Separate wet fabric from sleeping gear, then open and dry the shelter as soon as you reach home. Even a well-made cover or tent needs a chance to release trapped moisture.

The goal is not to defeat weather. It is to give water fewer surprises and give the next setup a clean start.

Keep moving the project forward
