Capture the few dimensions that determine whether a teardrop awning shades the galley, clears the hatch, and packs without drama.

01

Three lines define the fit

For a teardrop trailer awning, record the usable attachment line, the maximum projection, and the height of the hatch at its highest open position. These three lines describe the space the awning has to occupy. Do not measure only the trailer's overall width; the body curve often makes the usable line shorter.

Use a flexible tape for curved rails and note where the tape starts. Photograph each measurement with the tape visible. A quick image prevents a small assumption from becoming a large pattern change.

  • Attachment line: end point to end point.
  • Projection: rail to the farthest comfortable shade edge.
  • Clearance: ground to open hatch, plus a little movement room.

02

Account for the hatch swing

Open the hatch fully before finalizing the awning width. The hatch needs a clean swing, and the awning should not force you to choose between access and shade. Mark the hinge line, the latch, and any gas strut that passes through the canopy zone.

If the awning will stay attached while towing, check the folded shape against lights, marker lamps, and the trailer cover. A neat parked bundle is part of fit, not an afterthought.

03

Build in usable tension

A little adjustability is valuable on a small trailer. Ground poles, guy points, and rail attachments all have to work on uneven campsites. A good awning can be pulled taut without turning the hatch into a lever or making the first pole impossible to place.

Keep your measurement sheet with the trailer records. When replacement poles or a future cover is needed, those notes are more useful than a model name alone.
